Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the ability to recognize and regulate emotions effectively. In 1990, psychology professors Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer established the theory of EQ. In his book Emotional Intelligence, renowned author\u00a0Daniel Goleman\u00a0explains the five components of EQ:<\/span><\/p>

  • Awareness\u00a0of emotions and\u00a0noticing them as they occur<\/span><\/li>
  • Handling emotions\u00a0with poise and demonstrating the ability to self-soothe and overcome obstacles<\/span><\/li>
  • Self-motivation\u00a0and harnessing emotions to achieve high performance<\/span><\/li>
  • Empathy towards others and the capacity to relate to their feelings<\/span><\/li>
  • Social competence\u00a0in social interactions and leadership positions\u2013 necessary for healthy interpersonal relationships<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
