white-space: pre-wrap;\">Developmental disabilities are classified as a broad category of impairments that can affect development in four main areas: physical, learning, behaviour and language. Symptoms of developmental disabilities are more likely to appear at all stages of a child&#8217;s development, These usually appear before a person turns 22, although some symptoms may be present in children before birth. Some examples of developmental disabilities include autism, spina bifida, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, Rett syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome disorders, visual impairment, and severe hearing impairment, as well as neurodivergent conditions such as ADHD. Children with developmental disabilities need extra support in different aspects of their lives, such as mobility, self-care, independent living, learning, and receptive and expressive language. The term \u201cdevelopmental disability\u201d covers a wide range of conditions and the term is used in different ways in different cultures and countries. Therefore it cannot be accurately estimated how many children worldwide have a developmental disability. However it has been estimated that at least 53 million children under the age of 5 have a developmental disability. Since developmental disabilities cover a wide variety of conditions, it is not easy to pinpoint the causes. We can generally group these causes into two categories. Genetic causes and environmental causes. Genetic causes can also cause developmental disabilities. The genes for these factors may be inherited from parents or they may occur spontaneously. Syndromes caused by genetics often have special features such as Down syndrome which is caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21.
