Influence Of Social Media And School Climate On Examination Cheating Behaviour Of Secondary School Students In Oyo, Oyo State, Nigeria

Abstract

Examination Cheating Behaviour is not a new practice among students. Despite the efforts made by researchers to curb this ugly trend of examination cheating behaviour, the problem is still significantly present. Therefore, this study examined the influence of social media and school climate on the examination cheating behaviour of secondary school students in Oyo, Oyo State, Nigeria. The study utilized a descriptive research design of the survey type. The population consisted of all public secondary school students in Oyo township, Oyo State, Nigeria. Three hundred (300) students were selected as the study sample using a multistage sampling technique. In the first stage, six (6) public secondary schools were systematically chosen from the three local governments in Oyo township to represent the study population. In the second stage, fifty (50) students were randomly selected from each of the six (6) secondary schools, resulting in a total sample of three hundred (300) secondary school students. The study instruments were adapted and pilot-tested. The instrument’s reliability yielded a coefficient of 0.75, indicating that it was statistically reliable. Data were analyzed using simple percentages, charts, and T-tests to assess the three hypotheses at a 0.05 significance level. Specifically, the first hypothesis that there is no significant difference between male and female students in their perceptions of the influence of social media on their cheating behaviour was rejected, as the calculated T-value of 3.03 exceeded the critical T-value of 1.96 at the 0.05 significance level. Based on the findings, several recommendations were made, including the need for education stakeholders to focus on students’ moral development, enabling them to distinguish right from wrong.

Impact Statement

An investigation on the influence of social medial and school climate on examination cheating behavior of secondary school students was a paper carried out to examined the influence of the two independent measures on students’ examination cheating behavior in Oyo, Oyo State Nigeria. Cheating behavior regardless of whatever means it was been perpetrated completely derailed educational standard. The findings established through the empirical data underscored the intricate interplay between social medial and school climate as potential contributors to examination cheating behavior in secondary schools.

The findings of this study have great implications on a lot of people amongst which are; secondary school students, Stakeholders in the school, educational and counseling psychologists and researchers. Conclusively, the influence of the two independent measures can not  be overstated due to the technological advancement.

Olagunju Bolanle Idayat,  a holder of  Bachelor of Education in Guidance and Counselling, Master of Education Educational Psychology and presently undergoing her  Ph.D  programme in Educational Psychology at University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria.  She is a  married muslim woman blessed with wonderful children.  Presently,  she worsk as a lecturer at Emmanuel Alayande University of Education,  Faculty of Specialized and Professional Education, Oyo, Oyo State, Nigeria. Prof. Oyesoji Aremu is a Professor of Counselling, Criminal Justice and Open Distance Education from the Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan. He is also, an Associate lecturer in the Faculty of Law of the University where he teaches Psychology of Law. Professor Aremu who has published extensively in local and international journals has over 160 publications (including three books and twenty-eight chapters in books) to his credit. He has served the University of Ibadan in various capacities. These included, Director, Distance Learning Centre between 2017 and 2020, two-term Deputy Director (Academic), Distance Learning Centre, University of Ibadan, Sub-Dean (Undergraduate and Postgraduate), and Head, Department of Guidance and Counselling. He was also a visiting Professor and Ag. Director, Centre for Open, Distance and eLearning, Osun State University.
