A study on the paradigm shift of Online Education; with reference to YouTube

Abstract

Contrary to popular belief, online education is not a recent phenomenon, but rather born of the invention of e-mail. In fact, the 1980s and 1990s witnessed massive innovations in online education. Moreover, the coming of the World Wide Web in 1992 expanded accessibility to online education and emergence of new pedagogical methods. Today, one of the most instrumental tools utilised in online education is YouTube. The rise of YouTube as a significant platform for educational content has fundamentally altered the landscape of learning, moving beyond traditional institutional settings. The study will examine the paradigm shift in online education, focusing on the transformative role of YouTube as a social media platform. It will strive to explore how YouTube’s accessibility and diverse content offerings have democratized access to education, impacting learning methodologies and student engagement. The research will contribute to a deeper understanding of the evolving relationship between technology, education, and social media, specifically focusing on YouTube as an indispensable platform of online education.

Online education is electronically supported learning that relies on the Internet for teacher/student interaction and the distribution of class materials. As access to computers and networks continued to grow, educators recognized that cyberspace could be shaped for a wide range of uses. They also realized that online education was a separate field

The rapid rise of online education, particularly through platforms like YouTube, has significantly altered traditional learning paradigms. However, there is a lack of comprehensive research on how YouTube-driven education is reshaping the landscape of learning, including its impact on accessibility, pedagogy, learner engagement, and the effectiveness of knowledge dissemination. This study aims to explore the paradigm shift in online education facilitated by YouTube and how it alters the landscape of education vis- a- vis traditional education system..

About Author

The author, Ms Hoijahat Gangte, has completed her post- graduation in the department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Manipur University in 2019. Currently, she is a fifth-year research scholar in the said department in Manipur University .  Her approved research topic was on “Community Radio Stations in Manipur: Relevance and Struggles in the Upliftment of Rural Livelihood”. As ethnic conflict ensued in the state, and majority of the research area being Imphal- based, the author’s area of research was recently changed to “Alternative Media in the Hill Districts of Manipur” for feasibility of research and data collection. Her focus will be on the hill districts of Manipur which the author can have access to.
